If you’re reading this guide, you’ve probably got one of our metal CRUCIBLE artisans, awesome!
These keycaps are designed and machined to support all types of Cherry MX switches, but you may find that it doesn’t fit perfectly on the ones on your mechanical keyboard. No worries, we can help!
Tight Keycap
If you find that your aluminum keycap won’t go on your switch stem or is slightly too tight, loosening the stem posts is fairly simple. To loosen the stem evenly, we recommend using a hard, flat object (something like a flat-head screwdriver).
NOTE: Ideally, first wrap the tip of your screwdriver with a softer material like electrical tape before touching it to the metal keycap. Failing to do so first could result in scratching of the anodized layer from metal on metal contact.
Place the tip of your screwdriver (or other flat object) between the keycap stem posts, compressing down until the posts are slightly moved. Make small adjustments and re-check your stem on your switch until it fits.
Loose Keycap
More commonly, you may find that your keycap is too loose, rather than too tight. Luckily, tightening a loose stem can be an easier process than loosening one that is too tight.
For a quick fix, use a thin material such as a piece of paper or tape on top of the stem posts, and then put it onto the switch as normal.
You can also use pliers or a similar tool for a longer term solution to a loose stem. Again, wrap the tip of your tool with a soft material like electrical tape before touching it to the metal keycap. Using your tool, slowly push the metal stem posts slightly inwards. Make small adjustments and re-check your stem on your switch until it fits.
